Friday night’s game against Kew at Elgar Park in Melbourne resulted in a convincing win that sees the Benigo Bank WestVic under 16 boys team consolidate their position at the top of the ladder. Having lost only 1 game this season and with a goal difference of 31 in their favour this team is tracking well toward the finals.
Kew Junior seldom troubled WestVic but on every occasion WestVic regained their rhythm and control of the match. Playing a great team game with controlled and disciplined passing WestVic was able to work around a determined Kew defence and the score would have been higher except for some great work from Kew Junior’s goal keeper.
At the end of the first half the 4-0 score line reflected the momentum of the game but to their credit Kew Junior continued to make WestVic work hard to retain control. Coaches Alistair Cardew and Jamie Lovett took the opportunity to exercise players into different positions allowing those players to extend themselves and the team to enhance its depth of skills.
There were many team highlights but a particularly good passing sequence between Tom Evans and Jack White had the Kew Junior defence wondering where the ball was only to find that it had been moved well up the field toward their goal. Lachlan Hansford’s touch in the 2nd half that had the Kew defence going the wrong way while the ball fell to Evan Douglas who slammed it into the goal was wonderful hockey.
The return trip to Ballarat on the GoldBus although late was a buoyant trip with the team enjoying their win. All round a well played game and an encouraging indication of WestVic’s finals capabilities.
