Opponent: Monash University Hockey Club
Result: WestVic 0 lost to Monash University 1
Best Players: Jack Chadwick, Nathan Geaghan, Toby Hoy, Jamie Lovett
On Saturday the Bendigo Bank WestVic Hockey Men’s team travelled to Monash to play against the sixth placed Monash University team. While our WestVic team were confident that we had the skill and determination to be a serious challenge to their team we were well aware that they did have some advantages playing at home on their water-based pitch.
The WestVic team began the game playing the same strong, fast style that had seen them successful last week. Fast transitions through Ewan Wallin in the midfield and penetrating attacks through our wide half backs Michael Churcher, Al Cardew and Bryce Robinson saw the WestVic team apply heavy pressure to the Monash defence.
Throughout the first half the WestVic men continued to attack with speed and strength against a very experienced Monash defence. Strikers Simon Churcher, Toby Hoy and Nick Hargreaves pressed the Monash defence but were unable to create many scoring opportunities. While Monash had the occasional attacking opportunity, our defenders Benjamin Smith and Nathan Geaghan were able to deny them any chance of scoring.
Our WestVic team came out fast in the second half driving forward through our inners Jamie Lovett and Jack Chadwick and stringing together many outstanding passages of play that split Monash’s midfield wide open. While we dominated the midfield we were unable to penetrate their solid defence and gain shots on goal.
With fifteen minutes to go in the match Monash intercepted a wayward pass and pushed forward into our deep defence. Some quick passes earned them a penalty corner against the play and after defending the initial play Monash they used this opportunity to take a shot from wide. Keeper Lachlan Waddell was able to get a pad onto the shot but it wasn’t enough to keep the ball out of the net.
Despite Monash scoring, the WestVic team maintained their composure and continued to create offensive opportunities right up to the final siren but were unable to score an equalizer.
The WestVIc men’s next game will be against St.Bernards at home on June 14, a vital game and excellent opportunity for the team to gain some much needed points.
