The Bendigo Bank WestVic Hockey League 1 women went to La Trobe and were on a high and looking positive
after a well fought draw last week against Brunswick and trained well in an attempt to find an avenue to secure
WestVic started well and controlled the match on a very dead and unforgiving pitch, some nice passages of
play through Emma Ruyg at Left Half and mid field Hannah Moloney & Claire Noether found the high strikers
early with Elena Hobson and Cecily Frost creating lots of opportunities. Solid defence from Bianca Maher &
Ruth Ryan repelled every attack Latrobe threw at the west Vic team. This enabled the West Vic girls to set up a
penalty corner and Hannah Moloney scored nicely in the bottom corner to take the lead.
A see saw battle until half time which saw West Vic go into the break with a slender lead.
La Trobe were able to force a few penalty corners and just five minutes into the second half WestVic were
struck with an injury seeing Emma Ruyg going down with a lifted ball to the side of her head. Play was stopped
for several minutes whist officials assessed Emma and the match resumed with Emma Ruyg to sit out the
remainder of the match. WestVic remained shell shocked for some time and La Trobe were able to score from
a field goal.
WestVic regained composure and a well struck penalty corner from Bianca Maher put the west Vic girls in front
with 14 minutes remaining. Loose marking in defence saw an easy goal pop in for La Trobe and this seemed to
lift the opposition who once again controlled the match.
WestVic responded with nice defensive work from Claire Noether and Elena Hobson which created
opportunities for Captain Hannah Moloney with numerous forward runs to put strikers Cecily Frost and Mindee
Stone on the end of some nice passages of play.
Time ran out just after WestVic had a number of scoring opportunities but failed to grab a win again final result
being a tough draw 2 – 2.
