FINAL SCORE: WESTVIC 2 – 1 HAWTHORN
GOAL SCORERS: JOE NELSON-HILL, LEO GOLDER
WestVic are through to their first Grand Final in three years, with a win over Hawthorn in their Preliminary Final.
WestVic began brightly and dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game. WestVic were able to take control of the game and didn’t allow Hawthorn any sort of attacking chances. Through the dominant display shown early in the first half, it was a mistake that allowed WestVic to take the early lead. A through ball to Joe Nelson-Hill should have been cleared by the Hawthorn goalkeeper, but Joe continued to chase which forced a mistake by the keeper and allowed Joe to score in an open net. As pressure continued to mount, Joe was in the action again, splitting the defence with a lovely reverse stick pass to forward Leo Golder who was able to beat the keeper and make it a 2-0 lead going into half time.
The second half started similar to the first, with WestVic trying to take control of the match. Possession began to shift, and Hawthorn started to show why they finished 2nd on the ladder. Hawthorn controlled the play for most of the second half and the WestVic defence finally cracked, allowing Hawthorn to score a questionable goal. Although Hawthorn continued to attack, WestVic held firm to take a 2-1 victory and win through to the U16 Shield B Grand Final.
WestVic will face Frankston in the Grand Final on Friday 7th September.
